On that day, we were able to iron out the remaining issues left on the table. The following day we were able to confirm that we had reached a tentative agreement. That agreement is a two-year deal with no reduction in salary and no out-of-pocket costs on our health insurance for both years. We believe we gained ground on several fronts and made no concessions.

On January 23rd, our Association’s executive board unanimously voted to recommend the tentative agreement for ratification and on January 24th, in an emergency meeting of the Representative Council, our Council voted to move the tentative agreement for ratification of the general membership. So here we are. Members of the Kern High School Teachers Association will have an opportunity to vote on their contract. We will be holding two ratification votes as described below:

The first will be held on Monday, January 30th at Centennial High School from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

The second will be held on Tuesday, January 31st at Foothill High School from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM.

This agreement was a team effort. It was an agreement that was reached because of contributions from everyone from leadership to our general membership. I am privileged to have worked with such an amazing group of teachers. The members of our bargaining team are superb. It is an honor to serve with them. The team is composed of different personalities with differing points of view with one common interest – our members and the students they teach. Our Executive Board did an outstanding job in establishing direction and strategy. Our Representative Council made sure that the resources we needed were available and our Contract Committee was essential in establishing a two-way communication with members at all sites whose support was sincerely appreciated by everyone on the team.

We have a little breathing room now, at least until the middle of the next school year – this time on the 2013-14 school year. I’ve attached a clean copy of the T.A., the rough copy with changes (strikeouts and underlines) and a summary for your perusal. Always remember that we are stronger together.

Bargaining Team:

Jesse Aguilar, East Bakersfield High School Chair, (Vice-President)

Vickie Shoenhair, Shafter High School Member (President)

Adam Bishop, Liberty High School Member

(State Council) Eric Maine, Foothill High School Member

(Area Director) Kristine Jacobson, East Bakersfield High School Member

(QEIA Contact) Cathy Adams, Frontier High School Member

(Site Representative) JESSE AGUILAR KHSTA, Vice President East Bakersfield

High School 2200 Quincy Street Suite #201 Bakersfield, CA 93306 KHSTA Office 3409 Calloway Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93312

Phone (661) 588-3406 FAX (661) 588-3407

January, 27, 2012

On January 11th, the Association’s bargaining team met with the District’s team.
