What’s New September 2017

WHATS NEW AT KHSTA!   Since 2013 we have increased member salaries by 10.5% while maintaining no out-of-pocket monthly expenses for health benefits. The district pays about $17,000 per member, per year on health benefits.   We advocate for smaller class sizes through LCAP and through our contract.   Kern High Schools for Student Achievement scholarship program helps our students continue their educations.   We ensure hours for teacher professional development through our Joint Committee.   We improve working conditions for teachers and students by ensuring a safe learning environment free from harassment.   We improve working conditions and...

September 2017

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great summer!  This year we are pleased to welcome more than 150 new teachers into our association as the district continues to expand.   It’s terrific for our kids and for us! I know your calendar is already full,  but I’d like to invite you to join us at one of our many informational seminars this year, including those regarding member benefits, insurance, pharmacy benefits, as well as STRS and 403b/457 opportunities.   You are working hard for those perks – let us show you how to access them! We will also be offering a session about the latest on student loan forgiveness, as the topic continues to evolve with the new administration in Washington.  Look for seminar dates in the upcoming newsletters. With the departure of Jesse Aguilar, we are electing a new vice president this fall.  Be on the lookout for an e-mail through your KHSD account from SimplyVoting.com.  We are running our election through their website again.  The voting window is Sept. 13 through 18, so if you haven’t received a link please let Mark Trunnell at Centennial know ASAP. Also be aware that we are bargaining again with the district, as this year allows for “openers” on both sides.  Be sure to read Cathy Adams’s update in this issue for the latest. Lastly, please join us on October 3,...

Let Them Sleep? Later School Start Times Improve Graduation and Attendance Rates

In the current climate of polarized debate about best school practices and policies, it is refreshing to learn that there are some ideas that are supported by research and an emerging bipartisan consensus. An increasing body of evidence is showing how later school start times are making a difference in students’ lives, including improved educational outcomes and mental well-being. Physicians have been advocating for later start times for more than two decades, and the body of literature linking adolescent sleep with increased student success has only grown in depth and rigor.
